Reading

We learn lots of skills during our lifetimes, including reading. But reading is more than just a skill to learn – it’s a gateway to imagination, curiosity, and lifelong learning. However, in a digital age, getting kids to have any interest in reading can be a struggle, especially one filled with screens and distractions. With so many digital distractions how can parents nurture a true passion for books in young readers? Here are some proven ways to make reading an exciting and cherished part of a child’s life, something that will last a lifetime.

Make Reading Fun and Interactive

Children are naturally drawn to fun, excitement and adventure, so bring books to life! Start from an early age with reading them bedtime stories, at least 10 minutes per day. Use different voices for characters, encourage dramatic storytelling, and let kids act out scenes from their favourite books. Turning reading into a playful experience keeps them engaged and eager for more.

Let Them Choose Their Own Books

Some of the books given to children at school to help them learn to read can be unexciting. Don’t get me wrong, they are required to help them learn and practice reading. But in conjunction with these books give them the freedom to pick their own books as this helps to foster independence and enthusiasm – your local library is great for this and its FREE! Whether they love mysteries, fairy tales, or comics, letting them choose their own reading material ensures they see reading as an enjoyable activity rather than an obligation. Visiting libraries and bookstores can make the process even more exciting!

Create a Cosy Reading Space

A dedicated reading nook makes books feel special. It doesn’t need to be a big space. It can be a small corner with fluffy pillows or a themed reading area, having a comfortable space encourages kids to curl up with a good book.

Set an Example

We all know that children mimic what they see. If they see parents, siblings, and teachers enjoying books, they’re more likely to follow suit. I grow up watching my mum read, which she still does today, as do I. Share your excitement about reading, talk about favourite books and stories. Make books a valued part of daily life.

Incorporate Reading into Everyday Activities

Reading doesn’t have to be limited to books. Encourage reading through the skimming the cereal box at breakfast time, the road signs on the school runs, menus, recipes, and even interactive story apps. The more kids see the relevance of reading, the more natural it becomes.

Celebrate Books and Stories

Make reading a rewarding experience with book-themed celebrations! Hold family reading nights, participate in book clubs, and celebrate authors’ birthdays. Even small incentives, like a sticker chart for finishing books, can motivate young readers.

Final Thoughts

Fostering a love for reading starts with making it enjoyable, accessible, and meaningful. By incorporating books into daily life (such as bedtime) and encouraging choice and creativity, parents and carers can help children develop a lifelong passion for literature.
