Fart

Getting kids to pick up a book and enjoy reading something is on the decline – according to a recent report by the National Literacy Trust just 1 in 3 children aged between 8 and 18 are actually reading for pleasure. I have always believed that if you give young children something fun and engaging to read and let them find their own genre, they will read more. Now kids can be quite disgusting little creatures and just love bodily functions, so what about giving them a book about flatulence? And before you turn your nose up (most kids and adults do find farting funny), kids love to fart so reading a book such as Don’t Fart in the Pool by Ben Jackson & Sam Lawrence will certainly grab their attention.

Ben Jackson & Sam Lawrence have written a fun children’s picture book about that very windy subject. A fun story about the dangers of farting in a swimming pool. Although I really hadn’t thought that there were any dangers (but I had never given it much thought until this book arrived). Now that I have been educated on the matter, I now feel sorry for Stan and his troubles.

Don’t Fart in the Pool is a 24-page picture book for children featuring Stan, his taco eating record and his unfortunate swimming incident. It is part of the My Little Fart series.

Stan just loves to eat tacos and he used to love swimming. One Taco Tuesday he managed to scoff down a personal record of homemade tacos and was very proud of himself. It wasn’t until the next day that his troubles started. Stan went swimming, and the tacos had their revenge.

Stan, like most children, likes to create bubbles with his bottom burps when sitting in the bath. With this skill honed to perfection, or so he thought, he was quite comfortable farting in the swimming pool. That was until the unfortunate taco fart incident that left him embarrassed and ruined his love of swimming. Post-taco Wednesday, as Stan cannonballed into the pool, he could feel a fart sneaking up on him, as a fart expert he just let rip. No big deal I hear you shout, everybody has probably all done it at some point. The problem for Stan was that after SEVEN tacos the previous evening his fart created much more than bubbles. His fart managed to clear the pool and he couldn’t deny responsibility as the brown water gathering around him clearly identified him as the culprit.

If that wasn’t embarrassing enough, every time he entered a pool afterwards his parents would shout out, “Don’t fart in the pool, Stan” for everybody to hear, causing Stan a large amount of embarrassment.

So that is the danger of farting in a pool – never ever trust a fart! It could follow you around forever (especially if you have parents like Stan’s that shout out warnings all the time).

Overall, Don’t Fart in the Pool is a simple, funny and entertaining book (and may be considered disgusting by some), but children will love it. Whilst this book isn’t on the most pleasant of subjects, it is a subject that I guarantee most children (and many adult readers) will have a good belly-chuckle over and get them engaged in in reading. An excellent way of getting children to pick up and read a book. It even does a great job of building up the tension before it EXPLODES into action.

Don’t Fart in the Pool is a fun tale of caution – never take things for granted and NEVER fart in the pool! This simple story is definitely a guaranteed fun way to grab the attention of young readers.

Whilst the story is simple, yet imaginative and lots of fun, the illustrations that accompany the text (by Tanya Zeinalova) are absolutely brilliant. They are bold and bright and certainly let readers see the plight of Stan’s pool experience.

If you are looking for something fun to encourage a child’s reading, then Don’t Fart in the Pool by Ben Jackson & Sam Lawrence is a hilarious way to start – I can see grandparents far and wide reading this with their grandchildren (probably to the horror of the child’s parents). We have loved it in our house, adults and children alike!

If you love reading with/to your children and enjoying a giggle or three with them, then Don’t Fart in the Pool is perfect for your little air biscuit enthusiasts!
